Physical Education

At Bird in Bush School we follow the Get Set 4 PE Scheme for the teaching of PE. Leaders have chosen Get Set 4 PE as it supports the development of pupil knowledge across a range of Physical Education skills.  The programme is supported by ideas for teaching across the PE curriculum, in Gymnastics, in Dance as well as across a range of games and activities. We complement our curriculum provision with outdoor and adventurous activities in our PE provision, including offering cycling using our school bikes or running which we undertake in nearby parks. Swimming is taught across all KS2 year groups and we regularly extend our provision for swimming with additional sessions booked where availability arises at our local centres.

Aims:

At Bird in Bush, we aim to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through exceptional physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best.

Exceptional physical education

At Bird in Bush we have invested in a curriculum that is well sequenced and therefore allows children to build on their existing skills and knowledge as they move through the school. We have also invested in staff training, ensuring our lead PE staff have external consultancy support and that we provide in-house training to our staff so they can build their knowledge about PE and become more effective practitioners.

Whole school values

We believe in equipping children with skills that will serve them well throughout their life - as such we place great emphasis on teaching children how to ride a bike, thinking about how this leads to greater independence and the ability to access many more opportunities. In the same way, we teach swimming in every KS2 class every academic year, so that every child, no matter when they arrive in our school, has the opportunity to learn how to swim.

A whole child approach

We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and active lifestyles at secondary school and beyond. We strive to educate both our children and families to develop a greater understanding on how to live healthy lifestyles and make healthy choices. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and will continue to support our children's well-being. To this end, we have an exceptional active holiday club "CHAMPS", which ensures our children continue to pursue physical education and healthy food outside of term time.

Intent:

At Bird in Bush, we know that PE is an integral part of our curriculum. We believe that the subject inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in physically-demanding activities and helps them to become confident in a way which supports their health and fitness throughout their lives. Therefore, we believe that our children should be physically active every day, whether through daily physical activity, PE lessons, break times or extra-curricular activities.

At Bird in Bush, we also believe that children should have the opportunity to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as team-work, fairness and respect. We fully adhere to the aims of the National Curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children: develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities, are physically active for sustained periods of time, engage in competitive sports and activities and lead healthy, active lives.

Implementation:

PE is taught at Bird in Bush as an area of learning in its own right as well as integrated where possible with other curriculum areas. It is taught through a minimum of two PE sessions per week. We teach lessons so that children: have fun and experience success in sport; have the opportunity to participate in PE at their own level of development; secure and build on a range of skills; develop good sporting attitudes; understand basic rules; experience positive competition; learn in a safe environment; and have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active. Our teachers are supported to deliver the curriculum by expert PE coaches, using a range of age appropriate and engaging activities from the PE Hub.  Dance is taught by a specialist teacher. Pupils receive half a term of dance tuition a year.

Impact:

In order to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of our curriculum, we support teachers in their understanding of the expectations of the National Curriculum so that they are confident assessing pupils in every session taught. We use regular CPD to ensure that staff have a clear understanding of pupils’ next steps so they are able to plan and deliver lessons that respond to the individual needs of their pupils. Regular learning walks, pupil conferencing and lesson observations help our leaders maintain our high standards.

Enrichment:

At Bird in Bush, we aim to provide a variety of sporting opportunities. We provide a range of PE-related activities for children before school, during break time, lunchtimes and at the end of the school day. These encourage children to further develop their skills in a range of the activity areas and specific sports. These sporting clubs change each term in the school year. In addition, outside providers offer sports clubs after-school. As well as sporting opportunities within the school community, the schools also enter national and borough sporting events. The children have opportunities to competitively play in a range of sports and activities. These experiences allow for children to apply their sporting skills, develop team skills and learn how to play competitively.
